How to Detangle Curly Hair Without Breaking It: The 5-Step Method
Share
Curly hair tangles faster than straight hair: each curl catches on its neighbor, and sebum travels less effectively down the fiber, making it drier and more fragile. The result: pulling when detangling, broken hair in the brush, and frizz. The good news is that a few simple steps are enough to change everything.
1. Never detangle dry hair
A dry curl is rigid and breaks easily. Always dampen your hair before detangling: after showering, with a water spray bottle, or directly with a mist brush that releases a fine mist while brushing.
2. Add a little slip
A few drops of oil or serum on the lengths help the brush glide instead of catching. A lightweight oil such as rosemary & coconut oil or a non-greasy serum is enough.
3. Start with the ends
This is the most common mistake: brushing from the roots to the ends pushes all the knots downward. Hold a section, detangle the last 5 centimeters, then gradually work your way up to the roots.
4. Choose the right tool
Avoid fine-tooth combs and rigid brushes. Opt instead for:
- a wide-tooth comb for the initial detangling;
- a soft-bristle brush with an air cushion that adapts to the shape of the head;
- a mist brush if you want to dampen and detangle in one step.
5. Dry without rubbing
Rubbing with a terry cloth towel damages the cuticle and creates frizz. Squeeze out excess water with a microfiber turban towel, then let it air dry or use a diffuser.
The express morning routine
- Lightly mist the lengths.
- Detangle from the ends to the roots, section by section.
- Apply a drop of serum to the ends.
- Redefine a few curls with your fingers.
With this method, detangling becomes faster and you will find far fewer hairs in the brush.
